It saddens me to say, I think our mums are being let down. When it comes to wedding day fashion, the options for anyone over a certain age are limited and in some cases down right awful. It genuinely makes me cross. Even the term Mother of the Bride symbolises all formality and no fun! I know, mums can be tricky, they come in a variety of ages and shapes and however frustratingly to us kids they have opinions of their own! However contrary to popular (read media) opinion I know from experience they are very stylish, downright beautiful women. They have their own tastes and preferences and we, as brides, should not discount them or relegate them to fussy hats, shift dresses and crinoline. Their style is as important as our own and it’s imperative we pay attention to and spoil them in the wedding run up.
For my own wedding, my sister and I spent a day shopping with mum, just focused on her, with the intention of finding her a dress for the big day. I knew she would look good, I didn’t anticipate her looking bloody amazing. There was almost, almost, a bridezilla moment as I considered the possibility she might look better than me. I got over it. (She’s the one in the floor length, high neck amazing Raul gown on the feature image. Hi Mum!)
At the end of the day she deserved to look as good, if not better than me, she has raised me and loved me and lets face it, without her, none of this would be happening. Trying very hard not to sound patronising here, but there are some amazing style icons around for older women at the moment, women who are not afraid to take fashion risks or dress how they feel instead of how they think they should feel. Helen Mirren was even photographed wearing stripper heels on the red carpet. More importantly she looks so happy and comfortable doing it!
So in celebration of our mums here are some amazing outfits that I think all mothers of the bride should be aspiring too and brides should be encouraging their mums to go for!
